City of Brno

City of Brno

The city of Brno is the second largest city in the Czech Republic with a population of almost 400,000 people, lying in the central part of Europe. Within a range of 120 to 200 km from Brno, there are three important European capitals: Prague, Vienna and Bratislava. The international airport in Brno is serviced by regular scheduled flights.

Brno is the metropolis of Moravia and a reference tourist destination to explore the natural and cultural beauties of the region of South Moravia. The nature conservation area of Moravian Karst lies to the north from Brno, whilst vineyards with stylish wine cellars spread out towards the south. The city itself is surrounded by beautiful mixed forests, which offer numerous opportunities for walking and cycling.

Brno boasts many architectural monuments, which pay tribute to its rich past. A true pearl of modern architecture is the world-famous Tugendhat Villa – the work of the German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Nowadays, Brno is home to twelve universities and colleges, to the top bodies of the judiciary and a centre of science, research and innovations. It offers rich opportunities to enjoy cultural events in theatres, museums, galleries, cinemas and clubs. The city's Exhibition Centre is of enormous economic and social importance, with its eighty-year tradition, and is the venue of a number of international trade fairs, exhibitions and congresses. Cultural events are held in the city each year, as well as festivals and important sporting events (such as the road motorcycle Grand Prix of the Czech Republic).
